Nearly 300 workers at the Louis S. Wolk Jewish Community Center of Greater Rochester are being laid off.
According to a WARN Notice, the reason for the layoffs is listed as “unforeseeable business circumstances prompted by COVID-19”.
The notice says 343 employees were furloughed in mid-March. Of those workers, 296 will be permanently separated Monday.
"While we were hopeful that this furlough would be temporary in nature and therefore, not result in a mass layoff, the ongoing restrictions imposed by New York State, in particular those relative to the operation of a fitness center, have now made it impossible for us to avoid such action," a spokesperson for the JCC said in a statement.
